March is Women's History Month
As we continue Women in History Month, a notable figure in Kansas City was Annie Chambers. Born Leannah Loveall in 1843 near Lexington, Kentucky, she became one of Kansas City's most notable figures in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. After personal tragedies, including the loss of her husband and child, she moved to Kansas City in 1869 and established a brothel in the River Market area. Her establishment, located at 201 W. Third Street, was renowned for its opulence and operated successfully from 1870 to 1923. During this time, Chambers was known for her business acumen and for providing better conditions for her employees compared to other establishments. In 1923, she converted her brothel into a legitimate boarding house and later became involved with the City Union Mission. Annie Chambers passed away on March 24, 1935, at the age of 92.
Another amazing woman is Kim Wendschlag. She shares, “Caring Transitions has been a blessing to me in so many areas. I truly enjoy listening to the history and stories our clients so graciously share. Being able to comfort them in knowing their belongings are being handled with care and mean as much to us as they do to them is heartwarming. Bringing humor and fun to our projects is always a must for me as well. My husband and I just celebrated 25 years married. We love spending time with our 3 adult children/spouses and 5 grandbabies. Part of my heart is in a small village in Turkana, Kenya where I travel to share the love of Jesus.
